What is Metformin (Glucophage)?
Metformin (Glucophage) is a medication designed to help people with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels along with diet and exercise. You can take Metformin alone or use it with other diabetes medications, including insulin. It comes in both immediate-release and extended-release options. Metformin is also the only currently ADA-recommended medication for prediabetes.
Metformin is also commonly prescribed to treat insulin resistance in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), as well as for weight management more broadly.
How does Metformin (Glucophage) work?
Metformin has three ways it helps you keep your blood sugar in check.
- Decreasing glucose production: Part of your liver’s job is to produce glucose and release it into the bloodstream. Taking Metformin decreases the amount of glucose your liver makes.
- Decreasing sugar absorption: When you eat, your food travels through your digestive system and is broken down into its nutrients, including glucose. The intestines then absorb these nutrients. Taking Metformin decreases the amount of glucose (sugar) your intestines absorb during digestion.
- Increasing your insulin sensitivity: Insulin is a hormone the pancreas releases when blood sugar begins to rise. Insulin’s job is to trigger your body’s cells to intake more glucose from the circulating blood to use as fuel. As a result, blood sugar is lowered back to a normal level. When blood sugar levels are consistently high and the pancreas is releasing a lot of insulin to try to manage the increased blood glucose, the body can become less sensitive to insulin. If this happens, your body’s cells aren’t triggered to intake more glucose, and blood sugar levels remain high. This can lead to prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. If your body has become insulin insensitive, taking Metformin can help you increase your body’s sensitivity to insulin.
Can I get Metformin (Glucophage) online?

What does Metformin (Glucophage) treat?
Metformin helps people with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar. It is not approved for treating people with type 1 diabetes. If you have prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, managing your blood sugar is the key to living your healthiest life.

What are the side effects?
Metformin may cause changes to your blood sugar levels. Knowing the symptoms of low and high blood sugar is essential for managing side effects and risks associated with diabetes and its medications.
Metformin has several potential side effects including:
- Diarrhea
- Bloating
- Stomach pain
- Gas
- Indigestion
- Constipation
- Metallic taste in the mouth
- Heartburn
- Headache
- Flushed skin
- Nail changes
- Muscle pain
Several serious side effects, which require emergency medical care, include:
- Chest pain
- Rash
- Difficulty breathing

Precautions and risks of Metformin (Glucophage)
People with kidney problems should not take Metformin as it can potentially cause a life-threatening condition called lactic acidosis. Seek emergency care if you have symptoms such as muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain, dizziness, feeling cold, or feeling very weak or tired.
If you take Metformin, you’ll need to temporarily stop taking it before having any types of x-ray or CT scans that require contrast or dye to be injected into your vein.
If you drink alcohol regularly or engage in binge drinking, talk to your doctor about safe levels of alcohol intake while on Metformin. Drinking alcohol while on Metformin can increase the risk of lactic acidosis.

Can I use my insurance to pay for K Health?
With the exception of certain Surest and Elevance Health plans, we don’t accept insurance to pay for K Health memberships, one-time Urgent Care virtual visits, or mail-order medication, but we keep our prices low to keep medical care accessible to everyone. In many cases, our prices are lower than your insurance copay would have been!
If your medical provider prescribes you medication to pick up at your local pharmacy or orders bloodwork to a lab of your choice, you can use your insurance at those locations.
